Pitt vs Kansas, the "Onside Kick Bowl"
In a game of what many expected to be a title preview game, both teams were fighting to keep their undefeated records intact.
Pitt took a 14-7 lead and Kansas marched down to the Pitt 2 yard line in the final minute of the first half. Pitt held Kansas out of the end zone on 1st and 2nd down. On 3rd down Kansas ran the ball up the middle and milked the clock down to the final seconds, in order to call a timeout and kick a field goal leaving Pitt no time left to score.
However, there was a problem. Kansas had no timeouts and they watched helplessly, as the finals seconds ticked off and a golden opportunity to score was wasted.
Late in the 4th quarter, tied at 14, Pitt scored a touchdown to take a 21-14 lead. With two minutes left, and a 7 point lead, Kansas watched helplessly as Pitt attempted and recovered an onside kick. Pitt quickly added another touchdown to take a 28-14 lead.
Kansas responded quickly, and cut it to a 28-21 deficit. With about 1:30 remaining, Kansas kicked it deep to Pitt. Pitt gained a total 3 yards on short passes, on 1st and 2nd down, forcing Kansas to burn 2 timeouts. Now on 3rd and 7, Pitt needs a conversion to wrap up the game, and Kansas needs a stop to force a punt.
A sneaky drill pass over the middle converts it for Pitt. Kansas is forced to burn their final timeout, as Pitt proceeds to run out the remaining time.

This was one of the final games before the Madden91 onside kick rule was adopted by the Bill Walsh league. The Madden91 onside kick rule makes onside kicks legal only when losing and 1:30 or less remaining in the 4th quarter.
