Kansas swore theyd beat Miami like they do every year, and again they came up short despite every lucky break going their way.
Miami led 14-0 after the first and it was complete domination. Miami's offense was unstoppable and Kansas option was going nowhere.
In the 2nd, Miami had a chance to go up 21-0, they had 4th and 10 at the Kansas 35 and they threw it deep. The WR was 10 yards behind the defense, but Gino Toretta threw it over his head by mere centimeters, and Kansas survived. Then Kansas would score.
It was 14-7 and Miami started another drive. With 1st and goal at the 15, they threw to the right slot down to the 2 yard line, but the WR dropped it, and it was INTd by Kansas at the 4. Once again Kansas defense came up with a miracle stop. Kansas would drive but be limited to a FG, 14-10 at half.
Then Kansas got the ball to startg the 3rd and converted 5 3rd or 4th downs until they scored for an improbable 17-14 lead even though their defense had given up over 220 yards on Miami's 4 possesions. Miami's 5th time with the ball went like normal, and this time there was no dropped passes to stop them and they scored to make it 21-17 on a 20 yard middle slant.
Kansas got the ball and faced 3rd down at their own 40, they lined up in Shotgun and tried to force a quick-cheese to their left slot WR, but the pass was tipped and INTd by Miami's LB who ran it back. Miami now led 28-17 and looked to finish Kansas off as we go to the 4th.
Kansas again faced 3rd and 4th down almost every series, and yet no matter how many passes their forced into coverage, theyh kept coming up with miracle conversions. On another 3rd down at the Miami 40, Kansas did the Halfback Pass, and threw a 3 yd pass to their QB. Unbelieveably, the QB broke 7 tackles and outran the whole defense for a 40 yd TD.
Miami 28, Kansas 24, 3 minutes left. All Miami had to do was score to finish Kansas off. This was only Miami's 6th time with the ball, and Kansas had never stopped them in their own territory. Sure enough for the 6th time in 6 tries Miami drove right into Kansas territory and with 1:30 left was at the Kansas 25 yard line, in FG range. On 2nd and 10 Toretta threw a slant over the middle, only the WR didnt slant, and the pass was thrown directly to the Kansas safety. Unloike the 30 times Miami defender had wide open INTs and dropped all 30 of them, the Kansas Safety who for the first time all day had a chance to INT the ball, actually caught it.
Kansas now had a chance to win and stun Miami with all of the luck that went their way, it seemed sure that Kansas would win another game that they deserved to lose by 40.
Kansas faced, yup, you guessed it, 3rd and 10 right away, and threw a 12 yd completion. Then on 2 more 3rd downs, they converted again. Finally they hit a big pass down to the Miami 17 with 30 seconds left. Next play was a completion down to the 10, with 0:20 left and 1 timeout. A run out of bounds and a incompletion made it 4th and 1 from the 8 with 0:12 left. Kansas ran the option to the right and converted down to the Miami 4.
1st and goal, 0:06 left, 0 timeouts, down by 4. Kansas went into goaline, Miami in the 4-3. Kansas snapped it and rolled to the right, Miami blitzed to right as Kansas QB threw a quick fade back to the left to what appeared to be an open WR. But the Miami LB got there quickly and batted it away.
2nd and goal, 0:02 left, last play of the game. Kansas went in the Far formation, Miami 4-3. Miami was expected the screen and thats what Kansas did. Miami blitzed to the right side where the screen was, Kansas QB faded back to the left in the pocket and then threw....BATTED DOWN BY THE DT GAME OVER.
