EXPLANATION OF RULES
(*)Overtime - Reset game and play one quarter sudden death In Madden91 standard overtime the home team receives the ball, and overtime is infinite until one team scores. To include ties, only one quarter of sudden death overtime is played rather than infinite overtime.
(*)Pass Interference on 4th down(or 0:00 in half) Interference calls are alway questionable to bad, but the offense gets the benefit of the doubt on downs 1 to 3. Defense get the benefit of the doubt on 4th down, and the offense must miss a FG to turn the ball over. And nobody should win a game because of a 4th down interference call.
(*)Ball fumbled forward out of end zone is a touch back for defense Ball must be "miss field goal'ed" by offense,(turn over to defense). By rule in football this applies, however this is one of the rules missed in madden91
(*)Onside kicks only in last 1:30, by losing team, may not switch from kicker until ball kicked,(must go 10 yards) No switching players before kick because it is possible if a player other than the kicker is chosen before kickoff, that an onside kick could be recovered everytime done, however this is not possible if the kicker is the selected player, until after the kick.
(*)If the ball is recovered less than 10 yards, it must be punted away.
(*)Short kicks are legal anytime if not initially recovered by kicking team (e.g. ball kicked short to receiving team, who is hit and fumbles, recovered by kicking team)
(*)Blocked Field Goals
Blocked field goals are rare, but can be tricky, therefore to eliminate judgement calls and bias, a set of cut and dry rules are needed.
(*)No Sneek&Peek FG blocking. Sneek and peek is making a gap between the defensive linemen and rushing a player into the gap, who stands back behind a bit, from the other linemen.
The following are examples of blocked field goals
(1)ball holder is tackled/result=blocked field goal(even if the kicker kicks the ball off the ground)
(2)the ball is kicked after some disruption of kicker & holder, but is NOT shown heading into the uprights(camera stays on kicker)
The following are examples of good field goals
(1)the ball is kicked after disruption of kicker and/or holder, and the holder is not knocked down, and the ball sails through the uprights
(2)the kicker is disrupted and his kick is altered or moved, but the ball still makes it through the uprights
(*)Offsides rule - Only used if one player feels necessary. Sneaky people go offsides many times to force opponent score, to get ball back late in game. If defense goes offsides they must get a warning first, and the next offsides is a timeout. If no timeouts remain, they must down the ball and run the play clock to zero when they regain the ball, per offense. 1
